Blog: Introduction to... Environmental Testing

In a truly global marketplace, it is important to have assurance that your products will function in the wide range of conditions across the globe. From the high humidity of South East Asia to the low temperatures of Russia and Canada, there are many extremes to consider for your products and your customers’ operation locations.

Today, consumers are more informed and have more choice than ever before. In virtually every online shop, buyers can leave product reviews, while YouTube has endless unboxing and reviews of every conceivable product. Once your product has been released, you can be sure it will be compared to that of your competitors.

That’s why it is extremely important to ensure that your product is of the highest quality possible and fit for purpose. This is where Environmental Testing comes in.

Environmental Testing can ensure that products are:

  • - Able to meet the reliability requirements
  • - Fit for purpose
  • - Resistant to fatigue failure
  • - Able to continue to function under extreme conditions that they will experience in the field and in transit
  • - Safe to use
  • - Able to meet the required quality

Companies that successfully produce consumer products perform extensive testing, both in-house and with external / independent test facilities.  Any combination of testing may be required depending on your product’s intended use, location and industry.

For Aerospace applications, temperature and altitude may want to be combined with vibration to fully recreate the aircraft conditions, whereas for consumer electronics, simply cycling through various temperatures and humidities may be sufficient. Tailoring the duration of climatic exposure can also test the long-term fatigue effects on your product to provide further confidence in warranties and lifecycles.
